The Prime Minister of Northern Macedonia, Dimitar Kovacevski, has asked for guarantees for the knowledge of the Macedonian language and the historical past before accepting the French proposal for resolving the dispute with Bulgaria.
Through a Facebook post, Kovacevski has announced that the Macedonian government has not yet accepted France’s proposal, but in order for it to be acceptable, he said that “the Macedonian language must be respected and recognized, in the negotiating framework and clear protection of Macedonian identity.
“Historical issues can not be a criterion in the context of negotiations. Negotiations between northern Macedonia and the EU should begin before the constitutional amendment procedure for the inclusion of Bulgarians, Croats and Montenegrins in the preamble to the Constitution begins. Any solution will have to consult with the institutions of the Republic of Northern Macedonia “said Kovacevski.
His reaction comes after much criticism in the Macedonian public that the deal is harmful, but also the threat of some small parties that are part of the government that they will leave the governing coalition if the French proposal is accepted.
It depends on the French proposal whether or not the Bulgarian veto on Skopje for the start of EU membership talks will be lifted. The veto will remain in place if Skopje or Sofia rejects the proposal aimed at resolving disputes between the two countries over the language, history and status of the Bulgarian minority in northern Macedonia.
The Bulgarian Parliament and the Bulgarian government have not yet decided whether to accept the French proposal.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday, the six-month government of Bulgarian Prime Minister Kiril Petkov collapsed in a no-confidence vote over economic disputes and whether Sofia should drop its opposition to northern Macedonia’s membership in the European Union.
Previously, the opposition party, GERB, and former Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, supported the French proposal to resolve the dispute with Northern Macedonia and unblock the country’s European integration process.
He assessed the proposal as “very good”, as, as he said, it contains all the requests of the Bulgarian side. REL
