As part of efforts to curb the spread of the omicron variant, Norway will ban alcohol service in bars and restaurants, impose stricter rules on schools and speed up the vaccination program, the Oslo government said today.
Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere said the situation is serious and that infections are spreading very fast. “We have to take measures to limit further development… Omicron has changed the rules,” he said.
In Norway, records have been set for both the number of new COVID-19 infections and the number of hospitalizations, in part due to the prevalence of the omicron variant. In a risk assessment released today, the Norwegian Institute of Public Health (FHI) recommended that the government take the necessary measures quickly.
“This situation worries us more than before. If we do not act now, there may be negative consequences for society, not just health services and local communities. “If we do not take effective measures, we risk having 90,000 to 300,000 new cases of COVID per day from January,” said FHI.
On December 7, Norwegian authorities set a limit on the number of visitors allowed in private homes and shortened the time during which bars and restaurants can serve alcohol. “This situation worries us more than before. “We think omicron will become the dominant variant in the coming days.… We need to impose further restrictions soon,” said Line Vold, head of the FHI Infection Control Department.
