The latest round of talks with Iran aimed at rescuing the 2015 nuclear deal, on Friday (December 17th), was postponed amid questions raised by the UN nuclear watchdog about the disappearance of surveillance camera recordings at an Iranian nuclear complex.
Enrique Mora, the European Union envoy and co-ordinator of the talks, said the agreement should be concluded as soon as possible.
“We can not wait for months, the agreement must be reached within weeks,” Mora told reporters at the end of the seventh round of talks.
“There is a sense of urgency, which is absolutely important if we want to really succeed in these talks,” he added.
In 2015, Iran reached the nuclear deal along with Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States. The deal was aimed at curbing Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for easing sanctions.
But in 2018, then-US President Donald Trump pulled Washington out of the deal and reinstated economic sanctions, pushing Iran to start violating the terms of the deal.
The deal eased economic sanctions in exchange for curbing Iran’s nuclear program over the next 10 to 15 years.
Iran has always insisted that its nuclear program has peaceful purposes.
