The Ukrainian city of Mariupol is in serious danger of a cholera outbreak as Russia fails to provide basic public services to residents of the regions it has occupied in Ukraine, according to the UK Ministry of Defense.
“Ukraine suffered a cholera epidemic in 1995 and has experienced smaller outbreaks since then, especially around the Sea of Azov which includes Mariupol.” said the British ministry adding that isolated cases had been reported in the city since May.
“Medical services in Mariupol are now on the verge of collapse: a major cholera outbreak in Mariupol will further aggravate the situation.”
According to REL, Mariupol fell into the hands of Russian forces in May after months of bombing. Ukrainian authorities said the humanitarian situation in the city was deteriorating due to a lack of food and water.
The British ministry also said the Occupied Hersonissos region was suffering from a shortage of medicines.
