For more than two months of inspections in Wuhan, China, to uncover the origin of COVID-19, World Health Organization experts have officially dropped the investigation.
The full report from the investigations gathered so far is expected to be ready after March 14, said team leader Peter Ben Embarek. The latter led a group of scientists selected by the WHO to visit hospitals and research institutes in Wuhan, the place where the pandemic that has swept across the world is believed to have erupted.
The WHO did not provide details on why the investigation was halted. World Health Organization experts spent months negotiating with Chinese authorities, who sought to drop the theory that the pandemic was to blame.
In a press release a few weeks ago, Embarek categorically denied that the virus came from a laboratory in Wuhan, adding that the data so far show that the virus originated in bats. However, scientists in recent weeks have highlighted the negligence of the Chinese health authorities, to provide the information they needed.
