The National Institute of Public Health of Kosovo, NIPHK, announced that nine cases have been detected with the Omicron variant of the coronavirus in the country. The report that two of the affected persons came from the United States, two from London, United Kingdom, one from France and four cases with the Omicron variant were spotted in the Municipality of Mitrovica.
The latter did not travel on their own, but had contacts with someone from outside. “After the appearance of the Omicron variant (B.1.1.529) in the world, Europe, the region and now in Kosovo, an aggravation of the epidemiological situation is predicted”, said NIPHK.
Kosovo currently has the lowest rate of COVID-19 infections and deaths in the region, but continues to maintain restrictions on working hours and citizen movement.
Authorities say these restrictive measures are necessary as the number of trips has increased with the end-of-year holidays. On Sunday in Kosovo were recorded 12 new cases of infections from two thousand 430 tests performed while one death was recorded. So far, 2,990 citizens have lost their lives from COVID-19 in Kosovo.
Kosovo turns out to have vaccinated more than 60 percent of the population over the age of 18, but in recent months there has been a decline in interest in getting vaccinated.
