The World Health Organization (WHO) announced that BA.2 one of the Omicron subvariants of COVID-19 has currently become dominant in 10 countries and accounts for the majority of cases, reports Anadolu Agency (AA).
In the weekly COVID-19 update report published on the organization’s website, the latest situation regarding the global COVID-19 case, Omicron and its sub-variants was reviewed.
According to the report, for the period February 7-13 there was a decrease of 19 percent in the global rate of increase of COVID-19 cases compared to a week ago while the rate of loss of lives did not show change compared to a week before.
In the last week around 16 million cases of COVID-19 have been registered worldwide and as a result of the virus about 75 thousand people have lost their lives.
The largest decline in cases was observed in Southeast Asia and in this region the growth rate in the last week is set as 37 percent less compared to a week ago.
In the same period, there was a 32 percent decline in South and North America, 30 percent in Africa, 16 percent in Europe and 12 percent in the Eastern Mediterranean region.
– BA.2 is more prevalent in Southeast Asia
The report notes that BA.2, one of the sub-variants of Omicron, is on the rise in global COVID-19 cases.
According to case studies submitted to the WHO-affiliated Global Influence Data Sharing Initiative (GISAID), variant BA.2 accounts for more than half of all Omicron cases in Bangladesh, Brunei, China, and Denmark. Guam, India, Montenegro, Nepal, Pakistan and Philippines.
The information is shared that BA.2 is more prevalent in Southeast Asia accounting for 44.7 percent of cases with Omicron while in South and North America the prevalence rate of BA.2 is at 1 percent.
The report states that there is limited data that BA.2 spreads faster compared to Omicron and that it is not yet known to what extent the BA.2 sub-variant affects the human body./AA/
