Greece has sent a strong protest note to Ankara reacting again to a new and very serious challenge, as it has called it, from Turkey.
According to official Athens, Turkish military planes flew only 2.5 nautical miles away from the Greek city of Alexandroupolis, in the east of the country.
The Foreign Ministry speaks of “unprecedented violations of national sovereignty.” As noted in the protest note, “two Turkish military aircraft entered the national airspace illegally and approached Alexandroupolis at a distance of only 2.5 nautical miles.”
Also, by order of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nikos Dendias, this note was communicated directly to the Turkish Ambassador in Athens, while instructions were given to inform Greece’s allies and partners in the European Union, NATO and the UN.
The Foreign Ministry emphasizes that this action is a “very clear escalation of the Turkish provocation” and that it is part of Turkey’s attempt to promote its neo-Ottoman revisionism, violating all the basic rules of international law.
The move, the Greek Foreign Ministry said, also undermines NATO’s cohesion and immediate priorities, posing a clear threat to the European Union at a critical juncture, as the port of Alexandroupolis is a key hub for strengthening Greece’s allies, mainly of the US.
