A state of emergency has been declared in Ontario following protests by truck drivers, which have paralyzed the capital, Ottawa. Protesters have blocked the main trade route with the United States.
The Prime Minister of the Canadian province of Ontario, Doug Ford, vowed to do everything possible to end the protests.
Truck drivers are demanding that all restrictions imposed due to the COVID-19 pandemic be lifted.
During a press conference, Ford said on February 11 that he has urgently enacted laws aimed at stopping the cessation of the free movement of people and goods. The executive proposal also includes fines of up to C $ 100,000 (US $ 80,000) and up to one year in prison for those who block traffic.
Ford acknowledged that Canadians had the right to protest peacefully when they disagreed with the government, but said “this is no longer a protest.”
Truck drivers have taken the city of Ottawa – home to a million people – hostage and “targeted our roads for transporting food, fuel and goods across our borders” as they tried to push their political agenda through “Obstruction, intimidation and chaos,” he said.
The Canadian Ministry of Health, meanwhile, has said there will be no changes to the new measures for COVID-19 in terms of border measures.
Downtown Ottawa has been blocked by truck drivers for two weeks, while a bridge connecting Ontario to the U.S. city of Detroid has been closed for five days due to protests. The bridge, called the Ambassador Bridge, is the key point connecting the US and Canada, through which a quarter of all goods pass between the two countries.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is under intense pressure to bring the situation under control, as the US has called on Canada to use federal powers to end the blockade.
Protests erupted in Ottawa as protesters opposed the presentation of proof of coronavirus vaccination to truck drivers crossing the border, otherwise they should be isolated.
