Aggressive protests in Kazakhstan have left more than 160 people dead, while hundreds more have been injured and thousands arrested.
Confrontations have intensified between the army and citizens, whom the incumbent president calls a group of terrorists who want to seize power by force.
Kazakhstan is one of the largest states in Central Asia, having previously been part of the former Soviet Union. To help fight the protesters, Russia has even sent some military troops to help President Kassym-Yomart Tokayev. The latter in a press conference has ordered the police to open fire without warning.
Many countries around the world have called for a reduction in dialogue and a peaceful solution to the crisis, and recently Pope Francis has been added to these calls.
During the weekly prayer in St. Peter’s Square, the Pope expressed his condolences to the victims of the riots in Kazakhstan and again called for dialogue.
“I was saddened to learn that there were casualties during the protests in Kazakhstan in recent days. I pray for them and their families and I hope that social harmony will be restored as soon as possible through the demand for dialogue, justice and the common good. “
