For the third day in a row in all Greek cities, thousands of citizens stand in line from the early hours of the morning near the points where fast free tests are performed, at one of the culminating moments of the widespread spread of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus.
Authorities reported a record 50,126 infections with Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, which broke that of the previous 40,560 cases recorded on December 31st.
On the outskirts of Athens alone, over 20,000 infections have been reported, and about 5,400 in Thessaloniki. Also the number of intubated has gone to 619, while with 61 loss of life today, the number of victims since the beginning of the pandemic has gone to a total of 21,053. Three weeks ago, on December 14, the positivity index was 1%, where in 100 tests, fast or molecular PCR, one person tested positive. A week ago, the positivity index went to 8%, while in the last 24 hours it has reached almost 25%.
Also the high number of infections, of which 70% with the Omicron variant and 30% with Delta, has increased the number of hospitalizations. But despite the aggravated epidemiological situation, hundreds of thousands of students and teachers will return to the classrooms on January 10 when the schools reopen, and will have to take tests three times a week.
If a student comes out positive in a class, then the whole class will conduct tests for five days in a row, according to the new protocol approved by the pandemic commission on Tuesday evening.
