Khan is accused by the West that after his dramatic departure by no-confidence vote, he is causing a wave of unrest, difficult to control.
Two days after Imran Khan ousted him, Noor Alam Khan – a former politician of Khan’s party – was having dinner at a restaurant when confronted by another diner.
The man started calling her a “traitor”, an “American agent” and a “two-faced man” and then tried to hit him.
Noor Khan, is one of 10-12 former Imran Khan supporters who recently swapped votes by voting against him in a no-confidence vote.
Both he and others are accused of receiving threats that “they will end up like Benazir Bhutto, because you are an American agent and you betrayed Prime Minister Imran Khan,” referring to the former prime minister who was assassinated.
Following the incident, former Khan Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry said Pakistan was “very close to civil unrest”.
“Imran Khan has shown a lot of restraint, but even he can not stop the angry crowds that could lead the country to civil unrest.”
Khan was elected in 2018 amid populist rhetoric against Pakistan’s old governing dynasties, often covered up by deep corruption allegations.
But after rapidly losing support among members of the government, he stepped down in a vote of no confidence, leaving room for opposition leader Shehbaz Sharif, the brother of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who has been barred from taking office since his previous conviction for corruption.
