Beneath the Gaza Strip, ruled by Hamas and repeatedly destroyed by war, lie ancient cities buried under years of modern construction and busy roads.
“Gaza’s image is often associated with violence, but its history is exploding with archaeological treasures that must be protected for future generationsSays Jihad Abu Hassan, director of the local Premiere Urgence mission.
“The problem in Gaza is that when people start building, some of them will find archeological remains and generally, they are afraid to talk about it because they know there is a financial crisis, there is a lack of awareness about heritage here“, Says Hasan.
Archeology is a very political topic in Israel and in the Palestinian territories as the discoveries are used to justify the territorial claims of any people.
Authorities periodically report discoveries in the territory, but tourism in archeological sites is limited.
