The United States will not impose solutions on Belgrade and Pristina, and the agreement to normalize relations must be acceptable to the leadership and citizens of Kosovo and Serbia, said Matthew Palmer, the US special envoy for the Western Balkans.
“It’s completely normal”, Palmer said in an interview with N1 television.
Asked if there was a deadline for reaching an agreement, he said he “does not believe there is a deadline” but that the United States considers it “an urgent matter”.
“Time is not on our side. The longer we wait, the harder it will be and all the challenges will be more complicated ”, he added.
Palmer said the United States supports the European Union-led process and its envoy Miroslav Lajcak, and that he hopes the two sides will continue negotiations soon.
The US envoy to the Western Balkans also commented on a statement by Vetëvendosje leader Albin Kurti that dialogue is not one of his priorities.
“I heard the priorities that Kurti pointed out – transparency, good governance, the fight against corruption, the regulation of the situation in Kosovo – these are our priorities, we want all this to happen in Kosovo“, He said.
He added that Kosovo will have to deal with foreign policy and co-operate with its neighbors.
“Kosovo can participate in this dialogue in a constructive way by dealing with internal reforms. I do not see any contradiction between these advantages“, Said Palmer.
He noted that the dialogue “does not start from scratch”, that many aspects of the Brussels agreement have been implemented and that they have changed people’s lives for the better, citing justice, freedom of movement, energy and the search for missing persons as examples.
