Argentine gendarmerie officers discovered about 100 parrots in the trunk of a car during a traffic check.
Trafficked birds were kept in harsh transport conditions amid high summer temperatures in the country. Officials said the birds will be sent to the area zoo before being released back into their natural habitat.
Argentina and other Latin countries are known as a source of illegal trafficking of exotic animals, including turtles, monkeys, parrots, alligators and various felines.
Gull parrots are currently considered an almost endangered species, which means they may soon receive full protection status.
Trafficking of this species is also widespread in Brazil where the authorities have already drawn up a protection plan. This is due to the fact that they are considered parrots that “speak better” compared to other species.
