A British university lecturer has sued a luxury holiday company for ,000 200,000 in damages after a rabid elephant destroyed its tent while resting in Serengeti Park in Tanzania.
Sara Graves had suffered abdominal injuries when she was attacked by the male elephant raiding through the Lemala Ndutu camp in Tanzania in March 2019.
The 36-year-old living in Canada had paid 000 4,000 for a week off with her sister living in Britain, with the Yellow Zebra Travel agency.
She is suing the company because she was not guaranteed safety during her trip.
She tells that after the arrival of the wild elephant he was forced to jump with the vegetation to escape, before the locals shot the animal with bottles and stones to scare him.
Her lawyers say the elephant attack took place while she was staying at the Lemala Ndutu luxury mobile camp on the southern border of the Serengeti, consisting of nine spacious tents, decorated with leather armchairs, furniture and even candle holders.
Court letters state that Ms. Graves and her sister faced the only elephant that appeared ready to attack vigorously, on the morning of March 7, 2019.
“At the time of the incident, the camp was not fenced or protected from vegetation and wildlife,” said attorney Matthew Chapman.
The elephant was grazing among the vegetation when the complainant first encountered it. As soon as the elephant saw the complainant it started beating its ears, it is said in the lawsuit, let out a scream and raised its first leg before ‘releasing’ itself towards the vacationer.
The indictment adds: “The complainant turned around and started running to hide among the vegetation, as her tent was too far away.”
Her sister had heard screams and had come to the rescue and along with some locals had managed to remove the animal after about 30 or 60 seconds.
The trial is expected to begin soon.
