The Pentagon on Monday accused Russian forces of committing war crimes in Ukraine.
“We are certainly seeing clear evidence that Russian forces are committing war crimes and we are assisting in gathering evidence for that,” Pentagon spokesman John Kirby told reporters in response to a VOA question.
Mr Kirby also accused Russian forces of carrying out “indiscriminate attacks on civilians” that were “intentional” in many cases.
He said the United States would look forward to ongoing investigative processes and contribute to investigations into war crimes committed by Russian forces.
Last week, after President Joe Biden called Russian President Vladimir Putin a “war criminal,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called his characterization “unacceptable and unforgivable rhetoric.”
EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, who chaired a bloc of foreign ministers meeting in Brussels on Monday, also said that “what is happening in Mariupol is a massive war crime. They are destroying everything, bombing and killing everyone indiscriminately. That’s horrible. “
The besieged southern city, near the Sea of Azov has experienced some of the worst horrors of war. City officials say at least 2,300 people have died in attacks by Russian forces, some of them buried in mass graves.
