We are supposed to live in an age where facts and information are “at our fingertips”, when we use cell phones and computers to educate ourselves, but again there is something seriously wrong.
And in fact instead of getting smarter the IQ intelligence index is declining all over the world.
Science says that since the beginning of the 20th century, people’s intelligence was increasing, in a phenomenon known at the time as the Flynn Effect.
The ‘Techs Times’ network writes that this impressive growth at the time came from the improvement of education, food and health care.
But a new study from Norway says that the ‘Flynn effect’ has already ended, as from 1970 to 2009, in about 230,000 individuals analyzed, an average drop of seven points in the intelligence index was seen.
For some experts, the findings were very disturbing, while others said that the figures could be the result of unaccounted factors.
Stuart Ritchie, of Scotland’s University of Edinburgh, who was not involved in the study, told Tech Times: “This is concrete evidence for the reversal of the Flynn effect. The model appears to be correct as researcher Edward Dutton in London has discovered similar effects in the last decade.”
He found that in Western countries such as Germany and France, the general level of intelligence is declining.
Among others, in his documentary “Tomorrow, will everyone be an idiot?” among other things he says: “We are becoming more stupid. This will not go away by itself, so you have to think about what needs to be done.”
The experts in the study explain, “Tendencies do not come as a result of changes in the composition of families or genes (for example, immigration, damage to fertility) but are related to external factors.”
Economist Tyler Cowen said: “We’ve set out to build a social environment that encourages ignorance, but scientists don’t seem to know or say why.”
Some people blame this on technology and the dependence on it, the reduction of reading hours, the increase of hours of absorbing “junk media” and the degradation of the education system.
Others say the way intelligence is calculated may be outdated, but scientists still don’t have a definitive answer.
