Amid Russia’s nuclear threat, the United States is proposing to resume domestic uranium production.
Russia enriches more uranium than any other country in the world, says the Wall Street Journal. The situation created after its occupation of Ukraine, has exposed the fragility of the global supply of nuclear fuel, which is controlled by a small number of people.
Republican lawmaker John Barraso of Wyoming, one of the major US uranium producing countries, presented the proposal to increase domestic uranium production, and to completely ban Russian imports. Moscow, meanwhile, the day before, appeared to have taken a step back on its atomic threat.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia would use nuclear weapons only if the state faced an existential threat. Asked by CCN if Russian President Vladimir Putin would consider using nuclear weapons, Peskov said: “We have a concept of internal security and this concept is public, you can read all the reasons for using nuclear weapons. So if there is an existential threat to our state, then the nuclear arsenal can be used in accordance with our concept”.
On February 28, Putin announced that he had placed Russia’s strategic nuclear power on special alert, and has repeatedly hinted that he could press the red button if he feels threatened by the West.
