Outgoing Bulgarian Prime Minister Kiril Petkov said on Sunday that the French proposal to resolve the dispute with North Macedonia is extremely good for Sofia.
Petkov in an interview for the Bulgarian television, BTV, said that “for North Macedonia at the moment it is very difficult to accept those positions”, but according to him “this country should do this and choose the European path”.
He said that “it would be terrible if Albania continues the EU membership process and North Macedonia remains outside.”
“North Macedonia must understand that if they want to develop, the European path is the only path for that country,” Petkov declared.
The French proposal for the start of negotiations with the EU is expected to be examined next week by the deputies in the Macedonian Assembly.
The President of the Assembly, Talat Xhaferi, said on Friday, July 8, that in the regular coordination of Monday in the Assembly, it should be discussed when a plenary session can be held to inform the government about the proposal of the negotiating framework for membership negotiations with the EU.
On June 30, the government published the French proposal for the start of negotiations between North Macedonia and the EU, consisting of three documents, after which protests began in Skopje where thousands of citizens participated under the motto “Stop the Bulgarianization of Macedonia”.
The protests were made by the opposition parties VMRO-DPMNE and “E Majta”, which consider the proposal harmful to Macedonian state and national interests.
The parties in power have said that this is the best proposal that guarantees the Macedonian language as well as the identity and the historical past there and it should be accepted that North Macedonia does not miss the opportunity to unblock the integration process.
The American ambassador in Skopje, Kate Marie Byrnes, on Friday, through an open letter addressed to the citizens of North Macedonia, has called to accept France’s proposal to resolve the dispute with Bulgaria, which would open the door to European integration.
The same message was sent by the President of France, Emmanuel Macron. He said on Thursday that “the French proposal is perfect”, but that it brings the country into the European Union./Rel
