The development comes as German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has been criticized for recent commitments that he “will abandon the project if Moscow attacks Ukraine”.

However, Scholz said yesterday at a press conference with the Danish Prime Minister that he is confident that war on the continent can be avoided.

“The task is to have security in Europe. “Compared to a few weeks ago, a lot has happened,” he said, referring to the start of talks between the West and Russia.

“There is progress and we hope that with the dual strategy of unity and the announcement of sanctions, tensions will be reduced,” Scholz said.

Scholz did not name the pipeline exactly, and critics questioned whether he was indeed willing to give up the gas pipeline to Europe if Moscow attacked Ukraine.

Regarding the sanctions prepared against Russia, he said: “We have decided not to publish the catalog of sanctions and I believe that this gives us a little more strength.”

The ‘Nord Stream 2’ pipeline under the Baltic Sea has recently become the main point of negotiations for tensions between Russia and the West
