Not everyone knows but zoologists classify polar bears as sea mammals as they spend most of their time on pieces of ice far from the ground, and even have membranes between their toes to facilitate swimming.
One of the places where they are still found in large numbers is the island Wrangel in Russia, the Unesco-protected nature reserve otherwise known as the ‘polar bear maternity’.
But on a recent expedition to the small island of Kolyuchin, where there once was a meteorological station, it was discovered that a clan of polar bears had turned it into their home.
The former Soviet weather station closed in 1992, and with it the small village on the island was abandoned.
The researchers said polar bears walked between abandoned houses and barrels left decades ago. The females stood separately with their puppies near the shores of the island.
While ubiquitous barrels have been a problem in Arcticbecause once upon a time when fuel was brought to the island, it turned out to be costly to take the empty barrels again so they were just left there.
Even now landing on the island was quite dangerous and the images were taken with a low noise drone. Photographers said they tried to photograph the animals without disturbing them, and in fact after a while they did not even worry about the drone noise.
Asked about their behavior, expert Anatoly Kochnev, said that polar bears are very curious by nature therefore always try to open a closed door. Animals are also constantly hunted by humans so we probably use abandoned dwellings as a form of protection from it.
