A 14-year-old girl has died in the dressing room of a clothing store after US police opened fire on a shopping mall suspect.
The suspect was also shot dead in the incident that occurred at the Burlington clothing store in north Hollywood, in Los Angeles, USA.
Witnesses to the incident told local media that the incident started when a man started acting uncontrollably, threatening to drop objects from the upper floor of the store. He was also reported to have attacked a woman with the chain of a bicycle in the store filled with Christmas season shoppers.
Police came to the scene after reports of assault on the person and started firing even though there were no weapons on the scene, media and investigators said.
But during the incident, one of the bullets fired by the police penetrated the thin wall between the shops and fatally injured a teenage girl who was in the changing room with her mother.
Officers found the girl seriously injured when they saw the hole drilled in the wall by the bullet, said Los Angeles Police Chief Dominic Choi.
Investigators did not know if the victim was in the locker room when the violence started, or entered to protect himself, authorities said.
Mr Choi said police did not believe there was a connection between the tragic teenager and the assailant.
After the incident, the police promised a ‘transparent’ investigation into what happened and the circumstances of how the teenager lost her life.
“The chaotic incident caused the death of an innocent child and was devastating to all the people involved,” said police spokesman Michel Moore.
The names of the victim and the suspect have not been released, nor has the identity of the woman initially attacked.
