The first television footage from downtown Athens shows an entire area that appears to have been bombed, two buildings almost destroyed, and fire engines operating nearby.
It was 6:30 a.m. when a powerful explosion shook the Greek capital in the area near the Pillars of Olympic Zeus at the beginning of Syggrou Boulevard.
The explosion was so strong that the shock wave, in addition to damage to the building, caused damage to the adjacent building where a fire broke out, the windows were broken and the facades collapsed, but also in many buildings at a distance of about 150 meters. It even destroyed a taxi by pushing it a few meters away, fortunately without injuring its driver and some other vehicles parked nearby.
“At the time of the explosion I was right in front of the building, it was very strong, you look at the surrounding buildings. Vala threw us two lanes to the right. “I was alone on the road, fortunately there was no problem in colliding with another car,” said a taxi driver.
18 firefighters with 6 vehicles and a special ladder vehicle arrived and operated at the scene.
The explosion injured a 78-year-old man with burns on his hands and feet, who lived on the first floor of the building where the explosion took place and was immediately taken to hospital.
From the first investigations by the pyrotechnic specialists of the police, the fire service and the gas supply company, it seems that there is a gas leak in the area, but it is not yet determined whether this is the cause of the explosion, while no explosive remains have been found.
