Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda has stated today that his country is ready for a form of revenge by Russia, after banning the transport of certain goods subject to European Union sanctions through its territory and in the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad.
“We are ready and prepared for some unfriendly actions by Russia, secession from the BRELL system or other actions.” tha Nauseda.
He said he did not believe Russia would challenge Lithuania militarily because his country is a NATO member.
Nauseda defended the decision to block the passage of some goods, saying they are implementing what was decided at European Union level.
“We are simply implementing the sanctions, which have been imposed at the level of the European Union, and this has nothing to do with bilateral relations between Russia and Lithuania. “We look forward to implementing the next stages of sanctions and it would be very good for the European Commission to explain the content of the sanctions to the Russian authorities and perhaps remove some of the tensions that are now emerging.” he added, warning that escalating tensions would not benefit either side.
Earlier Wednesday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said retaliatory measures were being taken to halt Lithuania’s transit of EU-sanctioned goods to Russia via Kaliningrad. Peskov did not elaborate on what these measures could include and said there was no exact timeline for Moscow’s response.
