France is holding its second decisive round of presidential elections. At noon, a little more than a quarter of the citizens had voted, a turnout lower than at the same time five years ago.
During the final round of the presidential election in France, by noon a quarter of the French registered voters. The French Interior Ministry said turnout at 12 noon was 26.41%. This figure is slightly higher than the 25.48% recorded at the same time during the first ballot two weeks ago. However, she dropped out of the presidential election five years ago.
The candidates running are Liberal Conservative Emmanuel Macron and far-right candidate Marine Le Pen. In the 2017 election, when Macroni and Le Pen also faced off in the second round, more than 28% of voters had cast their ballots by noon.
Prior to the second ballot, a fairly low turnout was expected, as in the first round.
Macroni and Le Pen voted
Both candidates have already cast their ballots. Macroni voted with his wife Brigitte at noon in Le Touquet-Paris-Plage, in northern France. Le Penny voted this morning in Hénin-Beaumont, near Lille, in northern France.
Recent polls have put Macron ahead, at 55 to 56.5 percent. But a victory of his opponent is not ruled out. From time to time, in the presidential run-off in France, the candidate who came second in the first round also won.
Call to vote for Macron
Due to Le Pen-irt’s often very right-wing demands, many parties, eliminated candidates and social groups have called this time for a vote for Macron. If he wins, he will be the first French president in 20 years to win a second term.
But the result will also depend on the number of people who will vote. According to the polls, a record number of voters could vote with white paper or not go to the polls at all. Both candidates tried to get the 7.7 million votes of left-wing candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon, who did not qualify for the second round. Melenchoni urged not to elect Le Pen, but did not call for Macroni to be elected.
Both Macroni and Le Pen have tried to attract voters to Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s camp. For this, Macroni once again stressed the topic of climate protection.
Attention also in Berlin and Brussels
Brussels and Berlin are also watching the election closely. Unlike the pro-European Macroni, Le Pen wants to distance himself from Germany and radically change the European Union.
The French president is elected for five years. He exerts a decisive influence on the politics of the country and plays a more important role than the head of government he has appointed.
In France, polling stations are open until 19:00 and in some places until 20:00. Due to the time difference, some French territories abroad, such as the Caribbean, voted on Saturday./DW
