Pro-Russian separatists in the eastern Ukrainian region of Donetsk say they have blocked access to Facebook and Instagram in areas they control since 2014, the so-called Donetsk People’s Republic.
In a press release issued on May 11, the separatist Ministry of Communications stated that the decision was taken “to protect RPD residents from prohibited information that poses a threat to their lives.”
“Access to Meta’s social networks – Facebook and Instagram – was blocked in the territory of the republic”, the statement reads, adding that this decision was taken to prevent the distribution of “pornography with minors, content that propagates narcotics, suicide” and other prohibited information, including content with extremist and terrorist connotations ”.
Meta Plaforms Inc. has not yet commented on the statement, which comes as Russia continues to censor online information about its unprovoked invasion of Ukraine.
Russia’s state traffic regulator blocked access to Instagram shortly after the invasion began on February 24, after Meta said it would allow social media users in Ukraine to post messages such as “Death to Russian occupiers.”
Russia maintains close ties with Donetsk and another region in eastern Ukraine, Luhansk, and has supported pro-Russian uprisings in two separatist regions since the annexation of Crimea in 2014./REL
