Authorities in Saudi Arabia have seized children-themed rainbow-colored items from stores after claiming the colors encourage homosexuality.
Ministry of Commerce officials have gone to shopping malls in the capital Riyadh to seize items such as toys, hair clips, beauty items, clothes, hats, notebooks, pencil boxes and other trinkets.
A video of a news report, posted on Twitter by state television channel Al-Ekhbariya, shows two officials walking through stores to inspect goods before placing glowing items in a pile on the floor.
An official told the channel that rainbow-colored articles promote gay colors and are targeting the younger generation.
The ministry wrote on Twitter that the items were seized because they contain symbols and signs that call for deviations and oppose common sense. Stores that sell them will face legal penalties, he added.
The move comes after authorities in neighboring Qatar announced in December that they had confiscated rainbow-colored toys from stores. Saudi Arabia has no laws regarding sexual orientation or gender identity, but sex outside of marriage, including homosexuality, can be punishable by flogging or death.
