Hundreds of protesters gathered outside the Michigan police station yesterday after officials released images of the shooting at the back of a teenager of color after confronting a police officer who stopped his car on April 4th.
26-year-old Patrick Lyoya, originally from Congo, was killed by the white police officer who stopped him after he was driving a car with license plates that did not match the vehicle.
The suspect had gotten out of the car against the officer’s orders and had tried to run away, as seen in the video.
Police said the brawl had lasted about 90 seconds in which he had attempted to grab the officer’s electric pistol.
Lyoya was then lying on the ground by the police who ordered “Release the electric pistol!”, According to the published images, where the moment of the murder is not clearly seen.
Local police chief Eric Winstrom has released four videos of the fatal crash, including one shot by the passenger in Lyoya’s car, who had gone outside to film the gruesome episode.
“I consider it a tragedy. “It’s all very sad for me,” said Winstrom, a former Chicago police chief who called for transparency in the incident.
“As I saw in the video, the electric pistol fired twice but without finding contact. “Lyoya was then shot in the head,” Winstrom said.
For the second day in a row, there were protests seeking justice for the murder, with demonstrators accusing the police department of unwarranted force and racism against a suspect.
Loyaya leaves behind two daughters and five siblings, said Mayor Gretchen Whitmer.
The officer who shot him to death has not been publicly identified by authorities but has been suspended for the duration of the investigation.
