Since this Thursday morning, the situation in the municipality of Tuz in Montenegro has been significantly tense.
This municipality with the majority of Albanian inhabitants is led by Nik Gjeloshaj, who opposed the decision of the Montenegrin government to close hotels, bars and restaurants in this municipality due to covid.
Gjeloshaj says that Tuzi is on the list of green areas and there is no reason to close it. Montenegrin police, however, went to the town of Tuzi but were stopped by Tuzi residents who had also blocked the national road.
Nik Gjeloshaj in this action has received the support of other political forces in Montenegro, the parties representing the Albanians, but also the parties representing the Montenegrins.
Gjeloshaj said that this act, the government of Prime Minister Zdravko Krivokapic and Deputy Prime Minister Dritan Abazovic made that in Tuz is commemorated Kosovo Independence Day.
The country’s prime minister promised to go and talk to local Tuz leaders, but the decision was later overturned. Meanwhile, there were rumors calling on the Montenegrin prosecutor’s office to arrest Tuzi mayor Nik Gjeloshaj for violating the law and anti-covid measures.
But Chief Special Prosecutor Milivoje Katnić said there was no basis for action in the Tuz protest case, but he urged citizens to abide by the law. Meanwhile, the protesters, Albanians and Montenegrins together agreed to open the road but will not accept the closure of businesses.
