Anti-war protesters in Poland threw red paint at the Russian ambassador on Monday, not allowing him to pay homage at the Warsaw cemetery to Red Army casualties who died during World War II.
Ambassador Sergey Andreev arrived at the Soviet soldiers’ cemetery to lay flowers on Victory Day, which marks the defeat of Nazi Germany.
Hundreds of activists opposed to Russia’s war in Ukraine appeared before Ambassador Andreev as he arrived at the Soviet Soldiers’ Cemetery in the Polish capital.
Protesters prevented the ambassador and others from placing flowers in the cemetery.
Protesters held Ukrainian flags and shouted “fascist” and “killer”, while some wore blood-stained white sheets to symbolize the Ukrainian victims of the Russian war. Several other people around him were also sprayed with red paint.
Police arrived at the scene to help the ambassador and other members of his delegation leave.
Protesters marched in Warsaw to protest the war, bringing a tank on a tractor and placing it in front of the Russian embassy on Sunday evening.
About 20,000 Red Army soldiers who lost their lives fighting against Nazi Germany are buried in the Soviet cemetery in Poland.
Poland has removed some Red Army monuments in the years since overthrowing the Moscow-backed communist regime, but has not touched the cemetery.
