Border tensions and the threat of a Russian invasion of Ukraine have been at the center of all European media for several days.
In a link to the “Top Talk” show, Top Channel London correspondent Arben Manaj commented on the crisis in the East, according to what is being discussed in London, but also from his personal point of view.
This Tuesday, Russia said it was withdrawing some troops from the border, a dubious statement, as CNN reported that there continues to be increased force of Russian troops on the border.
According to Manaj, even if this information is true, Moscow still has the ability to invade Ukraine:
“It is something that is not yet known and can not be specified. Even if it is true, it does not matter much because Moscow has amassed so many military troops on the border that it would be illusory to think that since these troops withdrew, Moscow has reduced its ability to occupy”.
According to him, “these are more diplomatic games for domestic consumption, as western agencies have said that Russia is ready to invade Ukraine within 72/48/24 hours, while in Moscow the rhetoric is that we do not intend to do so”.
“The fact that Putin uses this supposed retreat wants to win the propaganda war to make any other claim unbelievable.
The truth is that Moscow has done what it wanted to do over the last few decades. Putin is also emboldened by the inefficiency and reluctance of the West to intervene in major conflicts. It is a kind of war, a kind of propaganda done to test and encourage”.
Asked if Putin could order the attack, the journalist responded with an analogy from history:
“Winston Churchill has said of Stalin and Hitler that they are two violent gangsters who rob hotels. If we are to have a kind of analogy with Putin today, he resembles the same person, but who has entered the hotel room with great force, where he goes to the reception and says that he booked the room a few years ago and I want the keys to room. It’s hard to think what will happen. Anyway, in London hoping for a diplomatic solution, there are several possibilities”.
Manaj says Putin is using the situation to put pressure on the West:
“I do not believe that Putin will attack, but he is using all this history to put the pistol on the head of the West, to put pressure on it and gain areas of influence and to put a kind of NATO advance gap. s towards the East. Let us not forget that Russia has also been invaded through the territory of Ukraine. It is a great idiocy to think today that NATO will attack Russia. Today the principle is no longer valid, that if a soldier takes me to the hospital, I will take you to the morgue. “London does not believe that NATO will make such compromises.”.
He recalls the West’s current economic dependence on Russia, especially for gas:
“Putin knows very well what the West is like, he knows very well that 40 percent of the gas in Germany goes from Russia. This dependence on Russian gas and other energy sources makes him think that he can make fun of European officials with body language. As Marx says, politics is a concentrated expression of economics. “For this reason, Boris Johnson describes this addiction as those who are addicted to drugs.”
Manaj calls the way the Great Powers are managing the crisis a failure, while Putin himself describes it as a fossil of totalitarianism:
“This is one of the biggest failures, but I hope it is also one of the biggest lessons the West can learn. I think that after the case of Ukraine, things should change in this regard. It is humiliating for the West for Putin to use this.
Putin has an economy that is about half the UK’s GDP, slightly more than Italy, so he knows that the billions he earns from fossils keep him a fossil of totalitarianism in Russian power. “This gives strength to the Russian army.”.
