“The president’s position was that Putin could not be allowed to exercise power over his neighbors or the region. He was not discussing Putin’s power in Russia, or regime change”.
This position was reinforced by the Secretary of State Anthony Blniken from Israel:
“I think the president stressed that President Putin simply could not be empowered by waging new wars or giving himself the power to engage in aggression against Ukraine or anyone else.”
Biden’s rhetoric against Putin has recently been sharpened. He has called him a war criminal and a murderous dictator. French President Macron has opposed the language. According to him, if they do not want the war to escalate further, the leaders must be cautious: “I am still in talks with Putin and such language reduces the hopes that the war will stop, our main goal.”
Macron is one of the leading figures in Europe negotiating with Putin to end the war. The latter’s plan seems to be being clarified with the Ukrainian intelligence chief who warned that Russia is seeking to divide Ukraine in the same way as it did with North and South Korea.
