Russian President Vladimir Putin has ousted his former bodyguard, making him Kremlin emergency minister, months after his predecessor mysteriously fell to his death from a waterfall.
Major-General Alexander Kurenkov, 49, nominated today by Putin, is the sixth security official to be appointed to a senior post near the president, writes the British Daily Mail.
The last to hold the post was Yevgeny Zinichev, also a former Putin’s guard, who died when he fell from more than 30 meters into the disputed event as suspicious.
Otherwise known as the ‘faceless man’, little is known about the new minister Kurenkov, other than the fact that he worked in the FSB intelligence services. Kurenkov has been a former schoolteacher but has since been seen close to Putin at many events.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said of the appointment: “Putin knows him well personally. This means that personal qualities and abilities allow him to serve in that function.
While critics in the West say Putin is increasingly paranoid and trusts posts only to those who can trust life.
Earlier in Zinichev’s funeral, Putin was seen stunned, calling his death an “irreplaceable personal loss.”
Critic Professor Valery Solovey cast doubt on Zinichev’s death, saying: “I want to say at once that it is not the death but the assassination of the general. He did not die alone, many people and events died with him. “
Another bodyguard of President Sergei Morozov, 49, has been appointed governor of the Astrakhan region before returning to intelligence services with the rank of Major General.
The highest rank of security officials seems to have been achieved by General Viktor Zolotov, 68, who heads the Russian National Guard.
The latter has also been the personal bodyguard of the first post-communist Russian president Boris Yeltsin.
