More than 900 people were arrested this Sunday by police in Russia, following protests that took place in 44 cities against the war with Ukraine.
Today’s protests also coincide with the seventh anniversary of the assassination of opposition politician Boris Nemtsov. According to Reuters, some of the arrests were made at an improvised memorial outside the Kremlin at the site where Nemtsov was shot.
Nemtsov was a well-known critic of President Vladimir Putin. He opposed Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and Moscow’s support for pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine, which eventually led to what Putin called a “special operation” to protect the two separatist regions.
