Prime Minister Edi Rama called on Albanian citizens to unite to face the crisis that has gripped the whole world.
He emphasizes that Albania finds it impossible not to be affected by the energy crisis, as it is not able to produce it itself.
However, at a time when the price of energy has increased in national markets, Rama says that this is not reflected in the country, ensuring that funding from the state will continue, until there are opportunities.
“Albania still can not produce all the amount of energy it needs. Our production depends on rain and snow, which for the third year in a row are much lower than up to three years ago! Drought has led to the point that almost half of energy needs are covered by imports, while for several months the world has entered an energy crisis. Already due to the war in Ukraine, the price per megawatt continues to rise insanely, hour by hour, from 52 euros a year to 550 euros currently! The odds are that the dizzying growth will continue and the forecasts go up to the total insanity of 1000 euros per megawatt hour!
Ever since the onset of signs of the energy crisis a few months ago, the government has warned of tough times ahead and put in place a financial shield for families and small business. Today Albania is probably the only country that has not increased its energy bill by a single penny; currently the import price per kilowatt has gone 61 lek, while family members continue to pay the same kilowatt as always, 9.5 lek!
All this frightening economic difference is completely covered by the state, beyond the 45 million USD that go every year from the state budget for the compensation of 2.5 ALL per kilowatt for each family in need. The extremely high cost of this unique shield is increasing daily and we will continue to fund it as much as we can. “But everyone should be aware that now the energy market is the biggest hostage of the war, which never brings good, but only pain”, writes Rama.
