Prime Minister Edi Rama chaired the plenary session of the UN Security Council, a day after Albania took over the presidency of the council.
The topic of debate in the Council was related to “strengthening accountability and justice for serious violations of international law”.
Shortly before the start of this debate, Prime Minister Rama explained the importance of accountability.
“The issue of accountability remains at the center of collective efforts. The objectives are threefold. To increase the role of the international community to hold states accountable, to strengthen accountability mechanisms in the regional aspect, to identify human rights violations and international violations to restore the dignity of victims and their relatives“.
Prime Minister Rama stressed the need to punish those who violate international law.
“We have seen for a long time that the perpetrators are released without any consequences. We should not let anyone believe that he can commit crimes and make peace with him. We must do everything in our power to respect the law. Working together for international law. An effective account will contribute to peace. “We must do everything we can to make the world smaller for offenders by all means.”.
During his stay in Washington, the head of the Albanian government was awarded the leadership award by the organization “Sasame Workshop” for the hospitality that Albania gave to thousands of Afghan refugees last year. While listing the reasons for his decision, Prime Minister Edi Rama took care to highlight one of the main virtues of Albanians.
“A lot of people have asked me, ‘Why?’ Why would Albania do this? We find the answer to this question in our history, in the code of Albanians, where it is written: “The house of the Albanian belongs to God and his friend”. By “friend” was not meant simply the one who was invited, but the one who knocked on the door, because he was in need. According to this code, knocking on the door is the will of God and you must open it.
In August last year, Albania responded positively to the invitation of the United States of America to open its doors to war refugees, but according to the Prime Minister, this was not his only merit.
“Modesty is not my strong point, but I want to be modest because that’s the truth. It was not my merit, because it just happened that I was the prime minister, it is the merit of the Albanians. We know how you feel and we have the honor to open the doors to those who today are the Albanians of 30 years ago “.
