It was March 1991, just a few months after Albania emerged from the clutches of communism. Thousands of Albanians filled the port of Durres to head to their El-Dorado named Italy, through an exodus with all the features of the biblical one.
The ships Tirana, Apollonia and Panama were overcrowded to head to the Italian shores of the land of hope. Italian television films made the rounds of the world, showing the suffering of Albanians and a painful sacrifice to make the European dream a reality.
The Regional Council of Puglia, commemorated this 30th anniversary where Prime Minister Rama called the images of the exodus as incredible.
“It seems like a story that happened thousands of years ago, but in 30 years many things have changed. Many things have definitely changed, because we came from far away and the changes in Albania have been incredible and not uncommon, but what makes all these years incredible is the change for the Albanians who arrived with those ships and that today they are integral part of this society. There are almost half a million and 15 thousand who have small and medium enterprises and for many years are no longer seen as suspicious people“, Said Prime Minister Rama.
The Regional Council of Puglia, honored the Prime Minister with the title “Rule of Puglia”, which is given only to Puglias, but the head of the council stressed that Rama is a Puglia with Albanian citizenship.
“Thank you all, thank you especially in a special way to Luigi and Michele, I said before and I repeat, they are the closest Albanians among the Italians in this difficult period for all of us and I hope I deserve all this though I’m not sure, but I will still carry with me for the rest of my life this moment on this earth where 30 years ago it was completely different and those who saw what happened 30 years ago should feel lucky to praying that they could live another 30 years and see how things have changed in a way that would have been impossible to imagine just 30 years ago”.
A day ago, Prime Minister Rama asked the Italian authorities to avoid bureaucracies and make the agreement on Albanian driving licenses a reality in Italy.
