As Ukrainian forces continue to threaten the Ukrainian capital Kiev, a resident of the area has turned the theater into a haven for the community.
Alex Porovensky told the BBC that about 25 people were being housed there.
“Now we are like a big family, everyone knows everyone, I know their personal stories, I know the stories of their children, everyone is united,” he said.
Despite the chaos that surrounds him, he and his friends are distributing supplies in the surrounding areas and the theater is continuing rehearsals for a show.
“Art can not be stopped, no matter what happens,” said Porovensky.
Coincidentally, the show is in a German city bombed by Allied forces in 1942 during World War II.
“I think it’s very ironic and scary in a way, because history is repeating itself – just the opposite, because Russia is doing almost what fascist Germany was doing in their time,” Porovensky added.
