Thousands of Israeli ultra-nationalists marched in Jerusalem this Sunday. As Jewish flags fluttered, they paraded through the city’s main streets, a move that has been considered a serious provocation by Palestinians.
Israel is playing with fire, according to a response from the Palestinian Presidency. While Israel says the march is to celebrate the Israeli occupation of East Jerusalem (including the Old City) in the 1967 Middle East war.
Jews gathered outside Damascus, singing religious and nationalist songs, and chanting “Death to the Arabs.”
Police intervened in the area, dispersing the crowd celebrating the Israeli occupation of East Jerusalem in the 1967 war.
Israel claims that all of Jerusalem is its capital. But Palestinians, who claim East Jerusalem is their capital, have seen the march as a provocation.
Last year, a similar march sparked an 11-day war between Israel and Gaza militants. The riots took place in a complex on top of a hill, which is considered a holy place by both Jews and Muslims. This complex is home to the Al-Aqsa Mosque, the third holiest site in Islam. It is also the holiest place for the Jews, who call it the Temple Mount and consider it the home of biblical temples.
