Massive crowds of wild monkeys have terrorized a city in Thailand after gaining an addiction to fizzy drinks, dads and sugary civic foods.
The town of Lopburi, about 120 km north of the capital Bangkok, is known for its monkey population, so much so that residents hold an annual festival in honor of primate animals.
But since tourists began returning to Thailand after easing restrictions in November, Lopburi monkeys have enjoyed more sugary foods and fizzy drinks that give them added energy and hunger.
Already the streets are always filled with sugar-powered macaque monkeys, competing violently with each other for food and territory.
Footage recorded this week showed hundreds of monkeys roaming the streets jumping on cars and people, stealing food or residents’ possessions.
The picture shows residents giving the monkeys tubes of sugar syrup which the thirsty animals suck to the end, while a man distributes bananas to them.
The total lack of fear of humans means that the behavior of monkeys is completely unnatural.
Residents say rival animal gangs fight for territory and when they encounter each other they fight bloodily.
Officials have tried to control the monkey population in recent years but without success.
A large number of them were sterilized in 2020 as part of a government program but the numbers have continued to increase during pandemic restrictions.
Wildlife officials try to lure them into fruit cages and then send them to the sterilization clinic where they are also marked as such.
But since the pandemic isolation, macaques have had the space to roam freely in the city and its suburbs, where kind locals fed them in the absence of tourists.
