A 1700-year-old Roman-era mosaic is the most valuable object of the new museum near Tel Aviv. Perfectly preserved, the extraordinary work, with colors and shapes that have survived the harshness of time, is 17 meters long and 9 meters wide, and makes an abundant exposition of figures such as lions, elephants and dolphins, along with fruit. , flowers or sailboats.
It was discovered in the town of Lod in 1996 and is believed to have been the floor of a building dating to the late third, or early fourth century. According to local archaeologists, this mosaic is not only the most luxurious that exists in Israel since that period, but also extremely unique in its new form and character.
“We found out that there was a reception hall in the house of a very rich man. This work is a proof of the fact that the artists who performed this kind of work in Cartagena and Sicily, have traveled all over the then Roman world and also received orders for apartments. “But he must have been very rich to look for such a luxurious mosaic from famous artists of the time, as it were from a Leonardo da Vinci of the Roman period.” says Hagit Torge.
The mosaic was dismantled with great care and skill, and for about a decade was exhibited in major museums in the United States and Europe, while the archeological center was being built in the Jewish state, which would be turned into its final refuge. The general public in Israel will have the opportunity to see this summer and enjoy this invaluable work up close.
