Several thousand Romanians protested in front of parliament today against politicians’ proposal for a mandatory vaccination passport at work.
Protesters pushed back security forces entering the parliament yard after the ruling coalition proposed a mandatory certificate for all employees.
The government says measures are needed to increase vaccinations but protests have intensified in one of the European Union’s most unvaccinated countries.
Police said no arrests were made in today’s protest, which lasted more than two hours.
“It was a necessary but insufficient protest, many more people should have come,” former miner Adrian Vrabiescu told AFP.
Vrabiescu said he had come from outside the city to take part in the protest.
“I came here because my health passport will lead to compulsory vaccination,” said 50-year-old Domita, with the Romanian flag in her hand and a large cross around her neck.
“I am afraid that those inside the parliament did not receive the message well today, but we will take to the streets again,” she added.
