The Dutch royal family has apologized today after crown princess Amalia invited 21 guests, according to them, to her 18th birthday party, although strict government restrictions allow only gatherings of up to four people.
The heiress to the British throne had canceled the closed-door celebrations from illness but had held a last-minute celebration in the palace gardens, authorities admitted.
King Willem-Alexander’s eldest daughter was only expected to have a private birthday party with family members but it was already understood that this happened.
Experts said the holiday “did not break concrete rules” but the event came under sharp criticism at a time when ordinary citizens have been isolated at home and in some cases from work by harsh restrictions.
New restrictions on social distance have been arbitrarily imposed across the country, including the early closure of bars and restaurants, as well as “non-essential” shops.
Professional sports events have also been closed to the public and family homes have been ordered not to host more than four guests.
According to the local daily De Telegraaf, the princess’s feast was held at the Huis Ten Bosch palace in The Hague, one of the three residences of the Dutch monarch.
The newspaper sources said that about 100 people attended but the royal family and the government said that there were only 21 guests as “the others had not come”.
The holiday is the last of the “mistakes” of Dutch royal family during the pandemic.
De Telegraaf reported that a few months ago the royal family took over a giant sailing yacht at a time when people could barely afford the costs of rising prices and layoffs.
Incidents have significantly reduced the popularity of the royal family.
Princess Amalia celebrated her 18th birthday on December 7 and thus becomes part of the State Council of the Netherlands, after reaching adulthood.
