Russian media, pro-Kremlin Komsomolskaya Pravda (KP) published an article quoting the ministry as saying that 9,861 Russian servicemen had died, a figure that even exceeds US intelligence estimates of Russian casualties.
The number of wounded was said to be 16,153 soldiers. But only after a few minutes this news disappeared from the online site, but still did not escape the international media.
KP editor Vladimir Sungorkin, when asked by the BBC about the news, said the published information was the result of a cyber attack.
Earlier, the BBC’s Russia bureau had compiled a list of 557 deaths of Russian soldiers confirmed in the invasion of Ukraine, noting that the Russian defense ministry had so far provided only one death toll – 498 deaths since March 2.
