Russia is attacking this afternoon the area where the last defenders of Mariupol are housed, the Azovstal plant where the largest amount of iron and steel is produced in Russia.
Eduard Basurin, who represents the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic, says the attacking troops are being aided by Russian planes and artillery. He added that forces are heavily bombarding the area as well as the surrounding residential areas.
Moscow says most Ukrainian cities are under Russian control. If the entire city of Mariupol falls, it would be a major strategic price for Russia, leaving it under the control of much of southern and eastern Ukraine.
Russia has called on Ukrainian soldiers defending the city to surrender and issued a new ultimatum earlier today.
