Russia has announced that it has begun withdrawing some troops from the border with Ukraine.
“Some Russian military troops on the border with Ukraine are returning to bases after the end of the exercises,” the Russian defense ministry was quoted as saying on Tuesday, Reuters reports.
Russia’s Interfax news agency quoted the ministry as saying that as large-scale drills continued across the country, some units in the southern and western military districts had completed their drills and started returning to bases.
As reported BBCRussia has stated, however, that some of the troops will continue to stay on the border with Ukraine, again on the pretext that the exercises will continue.
Russian authorities report, however, that the training of their forces with the Belarusian ones will end on February 20.
Russia had positioned about 130,000 troops near the Ukrainian border, including about 30,000 troops taking part in military exercises in Belarus.
