Polish energy provider PGNiG2 has now confirmed that Russian gas supplies to the country have been cut off.
The company imported more than half of its gas through Gazprom in the first three months of this year, but Poland says it will “succeed” without Russian gas and can get it elsewhere.
The Polish energy supplier said its underground gas storage was almost 80% complete and, with summer approaching, demand is lower.
On the other hand, Bulgaria says it has already fully paid for its April gas supplies and has accused Gazprom of violating its contract.
“At the moment, natural gas is being used more as a political and economic weapon in the current war,“Said Bulgarian Energy Minister Alexander Nikolov.
Russian energy giant Gazprom has completely cut off gas supplies to both Bulgaria and Poland after failing to receive April payments in rubles.
The announcement comes after Russian President Vladimir Putin demanded that countries considered “unfriendly” to Russia should start paying for gas supplies from the country in rubles – something Poland and Bulgaria have refused to do.
The demand is seen as an attempt to raise the ruble, which has been hit by Western sanctions.
Other European countries have also refused to pay in rubles – but now Poland and Bulgaria are the only two that Russia has announced is cutting off supplies.
