Russian troops are withdrawing more and more from their advance into Ukraine’s capital Kiev as they relocate to the Donabas region to the east.
However, the Ukrainian authorities believe that Russian troops have withdrawn to be repaired and supplied, as well as reinforced with additional military force, before returning to Ukraine and establishing a ceasefire in another country.
Signals that the Russians were redeploying eastward appeared when some Russian troops stationed north of the southern city of Mariupol were moving north to Donetsk, located in the Donbas region.
Russia’s stay away from the capital comes after weeks of stalled movement toward Kiev.
The Russian Defense Ministry now claims that their goal has always been to “liberate” the Donbas region, despite evidence that their initial intent was to occupy major cities across Ukraine.
