The United States has launched F-35 fighter jets in Germany to strengthen NATO defenses, the Air Force Reserve Command announced. The planes were sent to Spangdahlem air base along with maintenance and support personnel from the active combat wing 388 and reserve 419.
The F-35A Lightning II are the most advanced US fighter jets capable of carrying out “a variety of missions to prevent aggression and protect allies if prevention fails,” the Air Force said.
The 388th Arm is the main active combat unit capable of using aircraft.
“Deploying US F-35As at Spangdahlem Air Base enhances NATO’s defensive position and enhances our ability to act together“, Said the commander of the US Air Force in Europe.
“We are facing a dynamic environment and this deployment significantly increases our support for NATO defense”He added.
The move comes at a time when Russia is estimated to have amassed more than 150,000 troops on the border with Ukraine.
A senior Biden administration official claimed that Moscow had added another 7,000 troops there, and described its withdrawal as “false.”
“All the data we have show that they are publicly offered to talk and make claims of tension, meanwhile privately, they are mobilizing for war“, Said the American official.
The US has also launched eight F-15Es in Poland and six KC-135 Stratotankers that went to Ramstein Air Base in Germany.
